Bryan Ferry – „Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023” (Vorstellung der Werkschau)

Am gestrigen Tage (25.10.2024) erschien von der Pop-Ikone Bryan Ferry unter dem Titel “Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023” eine umfassende und Label-übergreifende Best Of-Compilation, die unterteilt ist in die Mottos „The Best Of Bryan Ferry“ (CD1), „Compositions“ (CD2), „Interpretations“ (CD3),  „The Bryan Ferry Orchestra“ (CD4) und „Rare And Unreleased“ (CD5).

Die Kollektion ist als 5-CD-Set mit insgesamt 81 Tracks ausgestattet und beinhaltet als Werkschau exquisite Tracks seines musikalischen Schaffens bei den Labels Island Records, Polydor, Virgin/E.G. und BMG.

Versammelt sind auf der Retrospektive unter anderem solche Klassiker wie  die relaxt-sinnliche Pop-Ballade „Slave To Love“ (1985), welche Teil des Soundtracks zum 1986er-Film „9 1/2 Wochen“ war,  das atmosphärisch-mystische Lied „I Put A Spell On You“ (1993), bei welchem es sich um ein gelungenes Remake des Screamin‘ Jay Hawkins-Blues-Songs aus dem Jahre 1956 handelt, oder die romantische Pop-Nummer „Don`t Stop The Dance“ (1985), welche von Bryan Ferry gemeinsam mit Rhett Davies produziert wurde.

Fehlen dürfen selbstverständlich nicht Titel wie sein erster Single-Erfolg  „A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall“ aus dem Jahre 1973 (der Track enterte die Top Ten der britischen Single-Charts), seine Glam Rock-Version des gleichnamigen Bob Dylan-Songs aus dem Jahre 1963, sein zweiter Solo-Hit  „The ‚In‘ Crowd“ (1974 – UK #13) oder „Let’s Stick Together“, ein 1976er-Remake des gleichnamigen Tracks von Wilbert Harrison aus dem Jahre 1962, welches Verwendung im Film  „Samstags Immer, Sonntags Nie“ fand und in Großbritannien, wo die Single die Top 5 der Single-Charts enterte, mit Silber veredelt wurde.

Ein absolutes Schmuckstück der Compilation ist  gewiss „As Time Goes By“, Bryan Ferrys wunderbare Interpretation  eines Jazzsongs, der im Jahre 1931 von Herman Hupfeld geschrieben wurde. Verwendung fand der Titel unter anderem im Broadway-Musical „Everybody’s Welcome“ (1931) und in dem Film-Klassiker „Casablanca“ (1942).

Interessant für Bryan Ferry-Liebhaber dürfte vor allem die fünfte CD des Sets sein, beinhaltet sie mit „Feel The Need“, „Mother of Pearl (Horoscope Version), „Don’t Be Cruel“, „I Don’t Want To Go On Without You“, „I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know“, „Crazy Love“, „Whatever Gets You Through The Night“, „Bob Dylan’s Dream“,
„He’ll Have To Go“, „A Fool For Love“, „Lowlands Low“, „Is Your Love Strong Enough“, „Sonnet 18“, „She Belongs To Me“, „Oh Lonesome Me“ und „Star“ (with Amelia Barratt) sehr rare und teils bislang unveröffentlichte Tracks.  Taufrisch ist dabei der Song “Star”, bei welchem es sich um seine erste  eigen komponierte Nummer seit knapp einer Dekade handelt.

Die Retrospektive, welche die Vielschichtigkeit von Bryan Ferrys  Musik mit Tracks aus so unterschiedlichen Stilen wie Glam Rock, Pop, Jazz, Folk, Blues, Electronica, Ambient oder New Wave zu demonstrieren weiß, ist in verschiedenen Formaten erhältlich: als 5-CD-Set (81 Tracks), als Doppel-Vinyl (20 Tracks), als CD (20 Tracks) und digital (81 Tracks).

Macht summa summarum eine überaus ansprechende Retrospektive, die ich euch in dem Format des opulent ausgestatteten 5-CD-Sets mit sage und schreibe 81 Tracks empfehlen möchte.
