Bob Dylan – „The 1974 Live Recordings“ (27 CD Box – VÖ: 20.09.2024)

Am 20.09.2024 erscheint ein opulentes Deluxe-Box-Set mit insgesamt 27 CDS von Bob Dylan, und zwar unter dem Titel  „The 1974 Live Recordings“.

Columbia Records und Legacy Recordings, die Katalogabteilung von Sony Music Entertainment, veröffentlichen am Freitag, den 20. September, „The 1974 Live Recordings“ und feiern damit das 50-jährige Jubiläum von Bob Dylans Rückkehr auf Tournee in diesem Jahr. Die Sammlung enthält alle professionell aufgenommenen Konzerte des Künstlers aus dem Jahr 1974, die von der Band begleitet wurden, und wird als Deluxe-Box-Set mit 27 CDs erhältlich sein. „The 1974 Live Recordings“ bietet den Fans 417 bisher unveröffentlichte Bob Dylan-Live-Tracks – darunter 133 Aufnahmen, die von 16-Spur-Bändern neu abgemischt wurden, sowie jede einzelne überlebende Soundboard-Aufnahme – zusammen mit neuen Linernotes der Journalistin und Kritikerin Elizabeth Nelson.

In Verbindung mit „The 1974 Live Recordings“ hat Third Man Records für September die Veröffentlichung von The 1974 Live Recordings – „The Missing Songs From Before the Flood“ angekündigt, ein 3-LP / 1 x 7-inch Set, das aus denselben Aufnahmen zusammengestellt wurde und handverlesene Versionen aller Songs enthält, die Bob Dylan aufgenommen hat und die nicht auf dem Original-Live-Album von 1974 enthalten sind. Das Set wird ausschließlich auf farbigem Vinyl gepresst und ist über The Vault, den Direktversand von Third Man, erhältlich.

Bob Dylans Tournee 1974 war seine erste Live-Tournee seit acht Jahren und führte ihn wieder mit The Band zusammen, die bereits ein Jahrzehnt zuvor als Support des Künstlers bekannt geworden war. Bob Dylan und The Band traten zum ersten Mal in Arenen auf und spielten 30 Konzerte in 42 Tagen (oft mit zwei Sets pro Tag) vor durchschnittlich 18.500 Zuschauern – und setzten damit neue Maßstäbe dafür, wie Rockkonzerte aussehen und klingen können. Vor diesen Menschenmassen brachten sie eine Energie auf die Bühne, die Ben Fong-Torres vom Rolling Stone als „mitreißend und hochfliegend, einheitlich und präzise… an sich schon hervorragend“ beschrieb. Der Musikkritiker Robert Christgau verglich den Sound mit Bob Dylan, der „wie ein Lastwagen über seine alten Songs fährt“.

Die Tour ’74 begann am 3. Januar 1974 im Chicago Stadium – der größten überdachten Arena der Welt zu der Zeit – mit einem spannungsgeladenen und kämpferischen Riss durch den ultimativen Deep-Cut „Hero Blues“, einem akustisch-elektrischen Outtake aus den „The Freewheelin‘ Bob Dylan Sessions“, den er kaum zuvor – oder seitdem – gespielt hatte. Weitere Raritäten – wie die völlig neu erfundene „Ballad Of Hollis Brown“, das seit 1962 nicht mehr gespielte „Song To Woody“ und das Planet Waves-Outfit „Nobody ‚Cept You“ – wurden in den ersten Nächten der Tournee gut aufgenommen. „Wir wurden in Europa von jeder Bühne ausgebuht“, erinnerte sich Robbie Robertson von The Band gegenüber Newsweek an ihre letzte gemeinsame Tournee. „Was heute Abend in Chicago passiert ist, ist so beruhigend für uns.“

Der Empfang war nicht das Einzige, was sich seit der letzten gemeinsamen Tournee von Bob Dylan und The Band im Jahr 1966 geändert hatte. Seitdem hatte The Band sechs LPs veröffentlicht, auf dem Woodstock und auf anderen berühmten Bühnen gespielt und eine Reihe historischer Sessions mit Bob Dylan aufgenommen – von The Basement Tapes bis Planet Waves. Bob Dylan seinerseits hatte sich nach einem Motorradunfall im Jahr 1966 von der Tournee zurückgezogen, galt aber immer noch als der einflussreichste und bedeutendste Star der letzten zehn Jahre der amerikanischen Popmusik“, so die New York Times.

Auch wenn sie es damals nicht wussten, standen Bob Dylan und The Band an der Spitze einer neuen Ära. Die Tour ’74 sollte dazu beitragen, die Vorlage für die große Rocktournee zu schaffen und viele ihrer gemeinsamen Erfahrungen zu kodifizieren – vom Anblick des Publikums, das massenhaft Feuerzeuge hochhält (wie auf dem ikonischen Titelbild von „Before The Flood“ festgehalten), bis zum hellen Aufblitzen der Hausbeleuchtung während des Signalmoments einer Show, in diesem Fall ihrer Performance von „Like A Rolling Stone“. Auch viele Songs, die auf der Tour ’74 zum ersten Mal live gespielt wurden – „All Along The Watchtower“, „Forever Young“ und der spätere Opener und Closer der Show „Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)“ – würden ein Eigenleben entwickeln.

Zu Beginn wurde die Tournee 1974 in einer Stereo-Soundboard-Mischung auf 1⁄4″-Band und Kassette aufgenommen. Am Ende der Tournee gab David Geffen von Asylum Records Aufnahmen auf Mehrspurband in Auftrag, dem damaligen Standard, die schließlich auf Before the Flood veröffentlicht wurden. The 1974 Live Recordings enthält alles – die Kassetten und 1⁄4″-Bänder sowie die Shows, die auf 16-Spur-Band aufgenommen wurden, neu abgemischt für diese Sammlung.
